The morning of Halloween I took a stroll with camera in hand through the streets of San Francisco. This photo shows the historic one-of-a-kind cable cars being pulled up California Street. A portion of the Oakland Bay Bridge can be seen in the background with "The Landmark" or One Market Plaza on the Embarcadero. Part of Chinatown can be seen midground. Few sights capture the spirit of San Francisco quite like a cable car climbing the steep incline of California Street. This photograph freezes a quintessential moment in time—steel tracks glinting in the sunlight, the wooden car creaking upward, and the city’s skyline unfolding in the background. It’s more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a moving piece of history. Many tourists rush to stand in the middle of the crosswalk between the traffic lights to seize an image of the cable cars being pulled up the hill and as they compose a shot they can hear the rattling of the continuously moving cable under their feet. Contrast the cable car with an SUV driving alongside under its own "steam". The corner of California and Stockton is a great place to meet tourists from all over the world as many have the cable cars on their list of "must-sees" while visiting San Francisco.
